In this overview, we will discuss guidelines for avoiding common issues that researchers encounter while using the platform. We recommend researchers review these best practices, implement them in their study, and inform users during onboarding to ensure data collection runs smoothly.
Configuration Guidelines
Ensure the project length is a reasonable period
We use the project length field in the Create Project dialog to control the number of days users participate in studies. By default, users will receive notifications and have access to surveys this entire period. Therefore, we recommend researchers create a project length no longer than they plan to have users in the study to prevent users from receiving unwanted notification prompts.
Schedule fewer than thirty notifications per day across all surveys
Due to device notification restrictions, we are unable to schedule more than 30 notifications per day on each mobile device. Therefore, we recommend researchers configure fewer than 30 notifications across all surveys in a project, including scheduled/random notifications, notification reminders, and follow-up notifications.
Test the project for a week before enrolling participants
We recommend researchers plan for at least one week of testing before enrolling participants in their study. By including additional buffer time, the TigerAware team can address unforeseen issues and help researchers adjust the study configuration if necessary.
User Guidelines
Limit users to completing the protocol on a single device
To ensure that the study schedule remains consistent and users receive the correct notifications, we recommend participants only complete a study on a single iOS or Android device. We also recommend users with an Apple Watch and iPhone only interact with notifications via their iPhone.
Encourage users to remain connected to the internet
Though TigerAware will still send notifications and cache responses when users have an intermittent connection, we recommend participants generally remain connected to WiFi or cellular data when possible. We recommend against enrolling participants who plan to solely use a WiFi connection.
Encourage users to use the app regularly during the study
User responses and notification logs are uploaded to our system each time a user opens the TigerAware app with an internet connection. To track participant progress and ensure their records are being continuously updated, we recommend users open the app daily while they are in the study.
